Are we ready for the challenges of the next 10 years?
Decades of ‘optimisation’ has meant that the shipping industry has lost much of its resilience, and we see fragility in global supply chains. How does the shipowner process this, keep their ships running with competent crews and plan for the future?
The 2020s have already seen more change the previous decade. New equipment demanded by regulations, such as scrubbers and ballast water treatment, has often led to unexpected consequences to ship operations. There is the increasing volatility of the world as we face pandemics and war in Europe. The drive for zero carbon commences which will lead to further changes. Autonomy is out there as a possible end point.

13.15 Lunch and close
The tanker industry is being hit with enormous challenges.
In the immediate term we have shortages of seafarers, changes to OCIMF vetting scheme, and drive to decarbonisation.
Over the longer term we can expect ot see volatile and unpredictable markets, demands for all kinds of technology such as ballast water treatment and scrubbers, and further challenges obtaining crew with the competencies we need.
Operations are likely to continue to be under enormous time pressure.
At our Tanker operator forum, “challenges operating tankers today and over the next 10 years", we’ll review the challenges and the best way to meet them and understand them.
OPERATIONAL - SIRE 2.0 - obtaining competent crew - time pressure from cargo owners - 'end of the oil industry' concerns from investors -
TECHNICAL - challenges operating scrubbers, low sulphur fuels, ballast water treatment - investment funds tied to using environmental kit - digital technology challenges
