Documentation and Tracking: Essential Elements
for Implementing Evidence-based Hearing Screening
and Follow-up Practices with Children
Birth to Five Years of Age

Presented by staff from the Early Childhood Hearing Outreach
(ECHO) Initiative, Utah State University

Tuesday, January 14, 2020
2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT

Implementing evidence-based hearing screening and follow-up practices for children birth to five years of age is dependent on more than using the recommended screening equipment for the population being served. The outcomes of hearing screenings must be clearly documented, and all children not passing the screening on both ears need to be tracked through the completion of a recommended follow-up protocol. The best hearing screening efforts are only as good as a program’s ability to monitor and support children after the initial screening, to ensure that those who need it receive timely and appropriate evaluation and treatment.

Topics addressed during the webinar include:

  • Recording Otoacoustic Emissions or Pure Tone screening outcomes using documentation forms that support the recommended follow-up steps.
  • Effectively monitoring the status of individual children who are in the process of receiving follow-up evaluation and treatment.
  • Availability of a free tracking tool that corresponds with the recommended follow-up steps and also serves as an aggregate record of children screened.
  • Using tracking data for quality monitoring of hearing screening and follow-up practices

Who Should Attend?

This webinar is for anyone engaged in conducting hearing screenings with children birth to five years of age using the Otoacoustic Emissions or Pure Tone screening method, as well as those responsible for supervising hearing screening and follow-up practices or data collection in Head Start or Early Head Start programs.
