Dr. David Appel
Dr. Appel is a professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology (PLPM) at Texas A&M University. Since coming to Texas A&M in 1981, his research program has focused on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and control of forest and shade trees, with an emphasis on the devastating oak wilt epidemic in central Texas.
Sheila McBride
Ms. McBride is the diagnostician (Extension Program Specialist) at the Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab. She has over 20 years of experience working at the Department of Plant Pathology & Microbiology at Texas A&M University, and is well-verse with nematodes, fungi and bacteria.

Overview
What's killing my tree? Bugs? Disease? Join Dr. David Appel and Sheila McBride for a hands-on tree diagnosis workshop at the Texas A&M Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab. This two-day workshop includes the fine points of field diagnosis, sample collecting and expert instruction in the lab on using diagnostic tools and techniques.

Monday March 11, 2019 - The Lab and It's Tools
10:00 - 10:15 Introduction to the Lab
10:15 – 12:30 View and discuss attendees’ submissions
In this section, you will talk about samples that you have sent in to Dr. Appel. (You will be sent information on how to do this after you register)
12:30 - 1:00 Lunch (lunch will be provided)
1:00 - 5:00: Laboratory Diagnostic Stations - including:
Tuesday March 12, 2019 - Fieldwork and Labwork
8:00-11:30 Field diagnostics
Work in the field with experts to learn how to observe, photograph and take diagnostic samples from trees and landscape plants. Samples will be collected for examination in the lab.
11:30 – 12:00 Lunch (lunch will be provided)
12:00 - 2:45 Lab Work
The attendees will learn the laboratory process of diagnosing tree problems by examining the previously collected tissues under dissecting and compound microscopes.
2:45 – 3:00 Hand out Workshop Certificates and CEU sign-ups
