We are very excited that the Leaders in Energy, along with the National Capital Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineer's will co-host the Energy & Sustainability Extravaganza at The George Washington University on Friday, February 20, from 11:30 am - 7:00 pm.  Other co-hosts include the GW School of Engineering and Applied Science's Office of Graduate Admissions, the Alexandria Emerging Technology Center, and DC Green Drinks.

You are invited to a very exciting afternoon and evening of energy, environmental, and sustainability-related events at The George Washington University's new Science and Engineering Hall - Auditorium!  Come see the living green plant wall!

The Lunch Panel will address:

“Career Paths in Energy & Sustainability: Perspectives from Successful Women Professionals.”  (11:30 am - 2:00 pm) 

Panelists are:

--Mar Kelly (President and Founder of District Sun);

--Kathleen Merrigan (Executive Director for Sustainability at The George Washington University);

--Kathleen O’Dell (AEE-Certified Carbon Reduction Manager and Senior Manager with Deloitte Consulting);

--Sunita Satyapal ( Director of the Fuel Cell Technologies Office at the U.S.Department of Energy).

 

 

 

 

 

 

Janine Finnell, Clean Energy Ambassador and Founder of Leaders in Energy will be the moderator.  

Male attendees are welcome as well and will also benefit from the insights of the panelists.  (11:30 am - 2 pm)

There will be over a dozen GW professors and/or facilities staff participating in the GW Energy & Sustainability Extravaganza.   There will be numerous professors from a variety of departments presenting their research in the Afternoon Showcase and Information Tables on a constellation of energy and sustainability programs at GW including law, economics, innovation and entrepreneurship, energy and environmental management, campus sustainability operations, and more.  The Extravaganza will highlight the applied research, education, and projects that GW is conducting in this arena which address real world concerns and solutions. 

 

GW Showcase of Energy and Sustainability Educational Programs and Research Programs (2-4 pm)

Showcase Session:   Part 1 – Energy and Environmental Management, Sustainability Campus Operations, and Urban Planning

Jonathan Deason, PhD., P.E., Lead Professor, GW Environmental and Energy Management Program.  He will provide an overview of GW’s educational program, research, and extracurricular activities related to energy and sustainability. 

Joe Cascio, Director, Director of the emerging GW Environmental and Energy Management Institute.  Joe will discuss this new institute. 

Meghan Chapple is Director of the Office of Sustainability & Senior Advisor on University Sustainability Initiatives.  She is also the co-chair of GW's Innovation Task Force.  Since Ms. Chapple launched the Office, GW has integrated sustainability into operational and academic activities.  Meghan will provide an overview of GW's Climate Action Plan, Water Plan, and Ecosystems Strategy.

Scott Sklar, Adjunct Professor, teaching two unique interdisciplinary courses on Sustainable Energy.  Scott runs a clean energy technology optimization and strategic policy firm, The Stella Group, Ltd.  He served as Executive Director for 15 years of two national trade associations concurrently - the Solar Energy Industries Association and the National BioEnergy Industries Association.

Showcase Session:  Part 2 - Economics, Law, Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Connor Roberts, President, and Josie Mascher, Vice President, GW Student Chapter, Association of Energy Engineers National Capital Chapter

Anthony M. Yezer directs the Center for Economic Research.  He will discuss his research on the energy footprint of cities.

Donna Attanasio, Senior Advisor  for Energy Law Programs.   She will discuss the GW law school's Sustainable Energy Initiative which she leads.  

Volker Sorger, Ph.D., Assistant Professor,  Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.  He is the Director of the Smart Innovation Labs at The George Washington University. He will discuss his work in smart-grid technologies and environmental sustainability.  Volker is the founder of the university's Green Renewable Energy Engineering (GREEN) Institute.  Volker is also the faculty sponsor for the AEE Student Chapter at GW. 

Jim Chung, founding Executive Director, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and a Co-Principal Investigator for the National Science Foundation I-Corps Node in Washington DC (DC I-Corps).  He will discuss the work of The Office of Entrepreneurship which provides programming around innovation, education, venture creation, and making connections to support GW entrepreneurs and the Mid-Atlantic start-up community. 

Justin Hyde,  GW student entrepreneur,  Co-Founder and COO, BitGrid Software Solutions.  BitGrid was recognized as a finalist in the Southeast region's CleanTech Open, a competition which identifies promising environmental and energy startups

Showcase Emcee,  Kimberly Davis.  Kimberly is the President of the consulting firm, Kimberly V. Davis and Assoc., providing environmental regulatory compliance services in urban infrastructure planning.   She served as Director of Environment at the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) and her current focus is on renewable energy. 

Information Tables Session from 4- 5 pm to Meet Professors and Staff from Departments Working on Energy and Sustainability (4 -5 pm)

 

Evening Reception from 5- 7 pm (Light Refreshments Provided) 

Come to the evening professional networking Reception from 5-7 pm and hear Amit Ronen, Director of the GW Solar Institute talk about his goal to make GW the #1 solar university in the nation!   Listen to Director Ronen comments on the Impact of the Historic GW Solar Buy  where GW University Hospital and American University finalized the largest non-utility solar PV power purchase agreement east of the Mississippi River.

Pamela Hess, Executive Director, Arcadia- Center for Food and Sustainable Agriculture, will address sustainable food issues in the region and the work of her organization.
