This year marks the centennial of Sage-ing International’s beloved founder, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, born in 1924 in Zholkiev, Poland  in what is now western Ukraine.  His story will be narrated in a 3-part series by his daughter, Chana Tina (Schachter) Duskis of Israel, assisted by her two brothers, Reb Zalman’s student Rabbi Or Rose, and others.  In the first part of this three-part series, she will be assisted by her eldest brother Rabbi Shalom Schachter, Reb Zalman’s student Rabbi Or Rose, and others. The episodes will be presented in a podcast video-type format, accessed via ZOOM.

Future Episodes

July 11th - Episode 2 - Growing Up with Reb Zalman

This second episode portrays Reb Zalman’s young adult years through the eyes of his children.  Chana Tina will be assisted by family members. Two of her brothers are now Rabbis in the US and Canada, and three of her sons are Rabbis. Those who can join Chana Tina will share their warm and witty memories of family as their parents and grandparents were maturing, receiving their formal and informal educations, and discovering their callings in life.

After 69 years of life experience, Chana Tina looks back now on those foundational grounding times, which inspired her to commit herself with gratitude to a life of global service and spirituality.  "The only way to get it together, is Together," was the life-lesson in community that her father instilled in her, which has made all the difference.

November 7 - Episode 3 - Learning from Severe Teachers

One of Reb Zalman’s most valued legacies is: “The Testimonial Dinner- A Banquet of Severe Teachers.”  It’s an exercise at dealing with life’s challenges that Sage-ing members have cherished and returned to again and again.  But how many of us realize that he lived that exercise himself, well before he wrote it?

This third episode in his life story, told by his daughter, unveils the challenges Reb Zalman faced himself in mid-career, which triggered the second major Turning Point of his life.  Chana Tina tells how her father – through the lens of much initial pain – committed himself to a panoramic life review that enabled him to heal, to find his core sense of spirit, selfhood and calling, and eventually to flower as an elder.  His favorite wisdom catch-phrase became:  “Gam Zu L'Tovah.”  “This too is for the good…”
