Varieties of Adoptive Experience

Presenter: Paul Brinich, PhD

Paul Brinich trained at the University of Chicago, the Langley Porter Institute (University of California at San Francisco), the Anna Freud Centre (London), and the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas (Chapel Hill, NC). He is a past president of both the Association for Child Psychoanalysis and the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Society. An emeritus professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he consults with a local public elementary school and the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood (Cary, NC). He is a senior editor of the Psychoanalytic Study of the Child. For many years he co-chaired (with Maida Greenberg) an APsaA discussion group on adoption.

Discussant: Robert Kravis, PsyD

This lecture and discussion focuses upon some of the ways in which "adoption" makes an appearance in clinical practice. On the one hand, I argue that there is no such thing as an adopted child; on the other hand, I argue that adoption highlights some of the ambivalences common to all human relationships. Participants who are able to view Mike Leigh's 1996 film, "Secrets and Lies" prior to the talk will be sensitized to and prepared for some of the issues included my presentation.
