Tradition Keepers

A path of preserving the system

In 1993, Phyllis Furumoto and Paul Mitchell began the journey of articulating the system given to them by Hawayo Takata, Usui Shiki Ryoho. This was done through the Master Intensives offered to all masters for the purpose of communicating the practice.  During this process - which was very dynamic in the first 10 years - the question "What does it mean to be a Reiki Master?" came time and again.

In the beginning the answer to this question was seen through three roles: Initiator, Teacher, and Mentor. Several years later the role of Student was added. This seemed to make the understanding of Mastery complete.

Then in 2010, Paul Mitchell had an insight that another role was emerging and being seen. He called this the role of Tradition Keeper.

Interesting that it has taken twenty-five years or so to articulate this aspect of our mastery.  We are products of our culture that prizes individual freedom and self-expression above all else.  The result has been a culture rich in creativity and rapid change for its own sake without reflection or obvious discernment about the value or "big picture" benefit of said creation or change.

In our growing sensitivity and commitment to preserving what is precious and worth passing to future generations, we come to the need to delve deeply into the process and understanding of tradition.  We come together to open ourselves in community, to seek an understanding of the essence of what it means to be tradition keepers, and to look into ourselves to elucidate what is asked of us in owning the role of tradition keeper as part of our vocation as masters of Usui Shiki Ryoho.

Join Phyllis and Paul as they explore the roles of Mastery with the emphasis on Tradition Keeper.  How does this role connect with the others?  What does it mean to masters of this system?  What are the responsibilties of a Tradition Keeper?  Are there other traditions with a similar role in leadership?  What does this mean for the future of Reiki in general?

The sanctuary at Mount Angel is a perfect place for contemplation, discussion, and insight.  This weekend will begin to fill this role with substance and add to the conscious development of the Master Path as well as add to the articulation of the system.
