How will this work?

  • This conference will be conducted as a webinar. After you register for this event, you will receive instructions to register with Webex, the platform used to attend the webinar. Please follow the instructions to complete your Webex set-up to be able to attend the event, then join us from 9am-4pm on Friday, April 24. 
  • There will be a lunch break from 12-12:45pm, as well as a brief break in the morning and a brief break in the afternoon. 
  • Following the workshop, you will be asked to complete an evaluation. Continuing Education certificates will be administered after completion and return of your evaluation.

 

Presented by Alissa Gleacher, PhD, and Aleta Angelosante, PhD, trainers from the NYS Evidence-Based Treatment Dissemination Center, this webinar conference will explore school refusal and avoidance behavior, including differentiating school refusal and avoidance from truancy, discussing the various causes of school refusal and avoidance, and how to intervene with the child, family, and school to get the best results. Avoidance of distance learning will also be discussed. Resources and treatment options will be discussed. Didactic session will be accompanied by interactive discussion, case examples, and Q&A. 

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will understand school refusal and its causes.
  • Participants will recognize the clinical manifestations of school refusal.
  • Participants will have an understanding of the different resources and treatment options clinicians can utilize when treating school refusal and avoidance.

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.

                                   ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Alissa Gleacher, PhD

 Alissa Gleacher, Ph.D. is the lead trainer for the NYS Evidence-Based Treatment Dissemination Center (EBTDC).  Her clinical background includes work with children and adolescents across the diagnostic spectrum (including anxiety and mood disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, and behavioral difficulties). Specializing in cognitive behavioral therapy, behavior therapy, and functional behavioral assessment, Dr. Gleacher has received intensive trainings on the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, school-based mental health interventions, and a multitude of assessment measures.  She has extensive experience working with families from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds in Hawaii, Los Angeles, and New York.


Aleta Angelosante PhD

Aleta Angelosante, PhD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the NYU Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Angelosante treats children and families with depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), cognitive therapy, panic disorder, anxiety disorder, cognitive and behavioral therapy, phobia, anxiety disorder of childhood, dialectical behavior therapy, group counseling, mood disorder, and Tourette syndrome.  She has published numerous articles on anxiety in young children, and currently is a Trainer at the Evidenced-Based Treatment Dissemination Center, training mental health practitioners in New York State.
