Join us to learn more about Alzheimer’s Disease and how to help individuals and families manage after receiving a diagnosis. We will briefly review disease pathology, proper assessment, and how this disease impacts the individual and their community. Then we will review common symptoms and disruptions to everyday activities. The intersection of dementias with psychiatric illness and/or IDD will also be reviewed. We will explore care planning options at each stage; mild, moderate, and severe. Tools and local resources will be provided. 

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand normal aging versus types of dementia with focus on Alzheimer's Disease. Participants will understand basic knowledge of mild, moderate, and late stages of Alzheimer's Disease.
  • Participants will understand how to gain access to appropriate screening and diagnosis, including utilizing AD8 tool. 
  • Participants will learn about the intersection of dementias with psychiatric illness and/or IDD.
  • Participants will understand care plan and management options for stages of Alzheimer's Disease such as obtaining diagnosis, safety assessments/resources, medication management, maintaining meaninful daily activity, nagivating the healthcare system, and managing sundowning and other behaviors.

About the Presenters

Christopher Christodoulou, PhD

Dr. Christodoulou is a licensed neuropsychologist who provides neuropsychological evaluations and consults with the CEAD team regarding different diagnoses to help guide treatment and care of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Dr. Christodoulou received his BA in psychology and his MA in community-clinical psychology from the University of Maryland. He earned his PhD in psychology specializing in neurocognition from the City University of New York. Dr. Christodoulou also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in neuropsychology at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and the Neuropsychology & Neuroscience Laboratory of the Kessler Foundation. 

 

Abigail Kaske, LCSW

Abigail is a licensed clinical social worker in the State of New York. She has over ten years of experience working with a diverse population of adults with mental illness, specifically in housing and case management. She is passionate about the care and treatment of seniors, especially those experiencing the effects and frustration of cognitive impairment. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s disease/dementia is challenging for the patient and their caregiver, Abigail enjoys offering some relief via clinical assessment, interventions, education/navigation of healthcare system, and linkage to community resources/additional supports. She guides individuals to the appropriate services offered by the Stony Brook Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease and helps spread awareness about the center throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Abigail received her a BA in Psychology from St. Josephs College, and her MSW from Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work.
