CNED-5670-A--Facilitating Communities of Professional Practice-- 2 credits

A significant body of research demonstrates that schools that have strong professional community among staff members have higher levels of student learning and achievement, higher levels of job satisfaction and retention for teachers, and are more able to respond creatively to the inevitable challenges schools face. Based on the tools and practices of School Reform Initiative, Inc. (SRI), this course trains teacher leaders and school administrators to design and facilitate the development of communities of professional practice in their schools. Candidates will consciously choose and use this model of professional development as the primary mechanism for promoting equity, supporting evidence-driven inquiry, professional growth, SRI critical friendship, communication, and accountability. Students in this course will create a professional development plan to promote the use of communities of professional practice in their school setting. Candidates will also use the tools developed in this course to help with more general professional development planning, teacher supervision and evaluation, and meeting facilitation.

This four-day workshop is a continuing education registration at Antioch University New England, earning professional development clock hours. With the continuing education registration, you will be issued a Certificate of Participation as verification of earned clock hours. It is your responsibility to maintain this record.

You also have the OPTION of taking this course for graduate level credit. The Graduate Credit choice earns you 2 graduate level transferable credits, with a transcript maintained by the AUNE Registrar's office. This option includes an additional registration fee of $450. Please be aware that there will be extra academic documentation work for the graduate course.

About the Instructor: Laura Thomas

After nearly a decade of teaching high school English, debate, theatre, and speech, I joined the Education Department faculty at Antioch University New England, first as the Assistant Director/ Director of what would become the Antioch Center for School Renewal and later as the Director of the Experienced Educators Program, which provides MEds and certificates for working teachers. My portfolio includes our PBL/Critical Skills Classroom concentration and its related programs in STEAM, Digital Learning, Library Media, and School Leadership. My primary areas of study center on the development of teacher’s individual pedagogical approaches, social justice and equity in school restructuring (particularly in rural schools), resistance to change, and student-centered classroom practice. In 2020 I completed a 4-year clinical experience as a school librarian in a 60 student k-6 school. I live in Keene, NH with my husband and two children and can be found on social media @CriticalSkills1. Please contact Laura at lthomas@antioch.edu if you have questions on course content or logistics.
