“Practicing Torah - Branches of Judaism.”

"Practicing Torah - Branches of Judaism" will first survey the Ancient, Medieval, and Modern development of Judaism (Meeting 1, June 2) and then explore the three major branches of Present-day Judaism in America: Orthodox (Meeting 2, June 9), Reform (Meeting 3, June 16), and Conservative (Meeting 4, June 23). The course will conclude (Meeting 5, June 30) by confronting the history of Christian anti-Judaism. Meeting 5 will be optional (though recommended) for students and it will be open (and announced) to the entire Maine Conference UCC community. Each Meeting will feature morning and afternoon sessions.

  • Meetings 1 and 5 will be conducted entirely at the Maine UCC Conference Center in Augusta, ME.
  • Meetings 2-4 will feature a morning site visit for worship with a Jewish congregation - respectively Orthodox in Waterville, Reform in Bath, and Conservative in Auburn - and an afternoon classroom session conducted at a nearby UCC church.
  • Meetings 2-4 afternoon sessions will be given to Instructor (Hour 1) then to Student (Hour 2) presentations and discussion. In the period between Meeting 2-4 sessions (~11:30 - 12:30), the class will enjoy a brown bag lunch at the chosen UCC church and discussion of the morning's Shabbat service.

Students may "Zoom in" from a distance only to Meetings 1 and 5.
