CSI Lecture Series
Specs 101: Basic Concepts & Typical Conflicts for the Uninitiated

This course will cover some of the basic principles of specification organization, language, procedures, general requirements and roles and responsiblities.  This course is appropriate for any member of the AEC industry (Architect, Engineer, Contractor, Product Representative, Owner, etc.) who would like a better understanding of specifications and their role in the project delivery process as well as basic procedures to avoid conflicts. You will receive 1 LU of AIA continuing education.
Basic Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the anatomy of a specificiations.
  2.  Understand the role of the General Contions, Supplementary Conditions and Basic Requirements and how they affect individual specification sections.
  3. Understand some of the basic principles and procedures of specification writing and language.
  4. Understand some of the most common areas of conflict in specifications and how to avoid them.

Presenter

Cherise Schacter, Standards Coordinator, Interface Engineering
Cherise has experience with many facets of project teams. She has worked for a general contractor, an architectural firm and is currently the Standards Coordinator at Interface Engineering. Cherise is unique in that she has worked extensively in many areas of the industry including specifications, contract administration, marketing, business management, QA/QC and standards.Cherise is the current President of the Portland Chapter of CSI, Chair of the Institute Certification Prep Committee and a member of the CSI Academies Planning Team. Cherise is also involved in emerging professional development, programs, chapter education and is a CDT instructor. Cherise is passionate about specifications and coordination of the project team for the best possible project outcome and is using her current role to facilitate improved coordination between Architects and Consulting Firms. In addition, Cherise is actively involved in AEC Social Media.  They call her the #CSIKraken.
