Storytelling in the Classroom & Beyond

Developing a personal storytelling technique to support student engagement & comprehension

4-Hour Professional Development Session:
Earn a CUNY Certificate of Completion and CTLE Credit for Professional and Le
vel III Teaching Assistant certificate holders.

Working from stories, this session will encourage participants to focus on specific storytelling skills: voice and gesture, structure and pace, characterization and “hook.” Finding a personal storytelling voice heightens students’ comprehension and creates a learning space of connection and interest. Throughout the session, attendees will reflect on leading a storytelling, giving and receiving constructive criticism, and further applications.

What can I expect to gain from this workshop?
  • Effective and dynamic storytelling skill development
  • Oral storytelling practices to energize storybooks and texts
  • Uses for storytelling across curriculum topics

Who should attend? Educators and early childhood practitioners interested in creatively exploring new strategies to connect with their young people and curriculum content.

Led by Helen Wheelock, Director of the Early Learning Program. Light refreshments provided.
