You Are What You Eat: The Nexus of Food & Health

The connection between food and health has long been known and studied. While the “food pyramid” has evolved over the years, our thinking around the direct nexus between food, health and wellness is now coming into sharper focus. The largest group of consumers likely to dominate spending decisions in the next few years is “millennials.” Increasingly, they demand both transparency and traceability in the production of foods they eat, and more clearly established outcomes from those foods. The response from farm and food producers will be critical to meeting this demand.

Larta Institute’s Global Ag Innovation Network (GAIN), Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI), MyFormulary USA, and Mercy Hospitality are teaming up to convene thought leaders, entrepreneurs, industry and academic representatives as well as investors to promote understanding around how food and ingredients play a role in health and their importance to disease prevention and treatment. This intimate event will share trends and lead discussions around the numerous facets of the food-health continuum and the journey from farm to plate.

The event's goal is for participants to gain a clearer understanding of how food ingredients can improve human health as well as help advance opportunities in the health-food nexus. In addition, local Executive Chefs demonstrate the preparation of nutritious and delicious foods for a tasting lunch followed by a keynote on how to bring Functional Foods into our daily lives. This program will drive ideation around how foods can likely lead to better management of the health care trifecta of cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

The event will feature innovative approaches from entrepreneurs who are developing products and services to address specific health issues through food and food ingredients. These span “solutions” that begin on the farm (designer crops), to food systems and processes, which may better guide choices for consumers. Attendees will leave with an in-depth understanding of what Functional Foods are and can accomplish as well as how individuals can utilize them in their restaurants, businesses, and daily lives to promote health.
