Indoor Air Quality and Noise in Indoor Swimming Pools (10:30am - 12:00pm)
Chun-Yip Hon, PhD CPHI(C) CRSP CIH

Dr. Hon will present on the results of two reseach studies including:

Indoor Air Quality in Pools
Poor indoor air quality in a pool can affect the health and well-being of both the pool staff and visitors to the pool.  The research team evaluated six pools within a municipality to assess the quality of the indoor air.  Specifically, they examined chemical contaminants (chlorine, hydrogen chloride, trichloramines), typical indoor air quality parameters (temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide) as well as airborne mould.

Noise in Indoor Pools
Excessive noise exposure is the leading cause of noise-induced hearing loss - an irreversible health condition.  Given the fact that there is a great deal of activities which can generate noise within an indoor pool (e.g. shouting, water slides, splashing and whistle blowing), the research team decided to assess the noise levels of various pools within different municipalities and compared them to Ontario's noise threshold of 85 dBA.

Lunch & Networking (12:00pm - 1:00pm)
Lunch will be provided.

Safety Improvements at Quarry Lake in Canmore, Alberta (1:15pm-2:00pm)
Lisa Guest, Supervisor of Parks & Mandy Long, Supervisor of Aquatics; Town of Canmore

Lisa and Mandy will provide a presentation on the safety improvements undertaken by the Town of Canmore at Quarry Lake in response to two drowning incidents and to improve public safety. The presentation will address the features of the lake and how, why and what safety improvements were made and the learnings from this valuable project. Quarry Lake is the first unsupervised municipal water body in Alberta that has taken on the addition of signage and safety equipment standards.

The Evolution of the Borden Natural Swimming Pool (2:00pm - 2:45pm)
Shauna Graham, Operations Supervisor, City of Edmonton Leisure Centres & Cyndi Schlosser, Facility Manager, Borden Natural Swimming Pool

Shauna and Cyndi will provide a presentation on the evolution, development and learnings regarding the new Borden Natural Swimming Pool which opened to the public in July 2018. The pool uses plants, zooplankton and granite rather than chlorine or salt to filter its water. This pool is the first of its kind in Canada and only the second in North America.
