Frequently challenging site conditions arise during geotechnical investigations for mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) structures. The concerns are typically related to settlement, stability, and bearing capacity. This presentation will explore the use of expanded shale and clay lightweight aggregates as a cost-effective solution when unsuitable soil conditions are present. The content of the presentation will include a general overview of common ground improvement methods and where lightweight fill options fit. Specific applications will be reviewed along with select project case histories.
