The Simple Act of Reassurance” ~ On Validation Theory, Social Justice and Sentipensante (Sensing/Thinking) Pedagogy

Keynote speaker Dr. Laura Rendón will share some expert advice about how we can better meet the needs of our underserved populations. Dr. Rendón is nationally recognized as an education theorist, activist and researcher who specializes in college preparation, persistence, and graduation of low-income, first-generation students. Come to this session to be inspired and reminded about the crucial role each of us plays in student success.

Workshop 1: Validation Theory follow-up in the Toyon Room with Laura Rendón
    This workshop will introduce you to all you need to know to integrate Community Service Learning as part of your course. We will start with the conceptual level of how to integrate the work deeply into your course objectives, and then go to ideas for assignments, and the nuts and bolts of developing partnerships that will work for your class.

Workshop 2: Host Online Office Hours That Your Students Look Forward to Attending in the President’s Conference Room with Paula Schales and Heather Garcia
Do you struggle to get students to attend your online office hours? Come to our workshop to learn some great tips for boosting attendance and increasing engagement during your online office hours. We will show you how to make the office hour more compelling, whether you’re meeting with a group of students or offering one-on-one appointments. We’ll also do a brief demo of Canvas tools you might consider using to host your online meetings.

Workshop 3: Teach Information Literacy in Canvas in the President’s Conference Room with Mary Thomas and Heather Garcia
Do you wish your students cited better sources than Wikipedia? Did you know that may GE classes are expected to teach information literacy? Would you like to help your students recognize fake news when they see it? Attend this workshop to find out why and how to teach information literacy, and see a demonstration of Canvas information literacy modules created specifically for Foothill students and learn how to integrate them into your own course.

Workshop 4: Mitigate Stereotype Threat and Create an Inclusive Environment in Your Work Area in the Toyon Room with Pat Hyland and Carolyn Holcroft
Whether you work in an office or a classroom - or both - there are simple things you can do to create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive for our students and colleagues. Come learn about cues in our environment that make people feel welcome or unwelcome, and get ideas for changes you might make in your own work space.

Workshop 5: Work-based Education in room 2018 (Student Council Chambers) with Robert Cormia
In this workshop Robert will discuss work-based education with an emphasis on learning in the workplace, including tours of business and industry, guest speakers and industry symposia, and internships. Integrating work-based learning into traditional education enhances student learning and career preparation. This session will provide an overview of work-based education, some examples of effective strategies, and how work-based education fits into and builds on internships and Cooperative Work Experience (CWE). We'll also give an overview of Foothill's virtual career portal, and how students can participate in finding jobs, internships, and work-experience.
