"End of Program Results from the Legacy Fleet Drag Reduction Program”
We are very pleased to announce that Dennis L. Carter, P.E., Senior Aerospace Engineer, AFRL/RQVA, will be our speaker on the 28 February (Wednesday) meeting of the Defense Planning and Analysis Society, 11:30am - 1:30pm, 2800 Presidential Drive, Holiday Inn, Fairborn, Ohio. He will discuss “End of Program Results from the Legacy Fleet Drag Reduction Program.”
Abstract: Following a very successful flight test program, the Air Force is evaluating the implementation of low cost drag reduction devices on the legacy transport fleet. These devices are passive vortex control vanes which reduce the base drag of the C-130 and C-17 aircraft. Coordination is underway with sister services and allied air forces to ascertain if further testing is required.
Mr. Carter has been a research engineer at the Aerodynamic Technology Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory for thirty-seven years. During that time, he has supported several flight test projects; include the X29 “Forward Swept Wing”, the F111 “Mission Adaptive Wing”, and the F15 “STOL and Maneuver Technology Demonstrator” programs as well as the NF16 “Variable-stability, Inflight Simulation Test Aircraft” development program. He has also served as the Air Force Liaison Officer to NASA/Langley Research Center. He is currently serving on the design team for the 5th Generation Aerial Target, which he briefed to DPAAS in 2013. He is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), a member of the Aircraft Design technical committee, and is an instrument-rated pilot.
