9:00 - 9:50 am  Live in the Present: Mindfulness for Educators by  Beth Rieken

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment with an open-mind. In this talk, I will share the latest research on the general health benefits of mindful living along with specific benefits for educators, including stress management and enhanced classroom climate.  We will practice simple mindful breathing and movement exercises that you can incorporate into your daily routine. I will talk about ways to incorporate mindfulness into your classroom and I will share briefly about my research on a meditation intervention to enhance creativity in engineering design problem solving.

Beth is a PhD Candidate in the Designing Education Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University. She earned her M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford in 2012 and her B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2010. Beth’s research focuses on the role of mindfulness, empathy, and curiosity in engineering design to promote open-minded innovation among engineering students.  Beth is also an RYT-200 certified yoga instructor.
