Positioning for the Board of the Future

Part 4 of the Excellence in Governance Certificate Program

Nonprofit boards have many roles to play as stewards of the organization, but none is more important than ensuring ethical behavior and providing sound fiscal oversight. In general, this means that boards are responsible for assuring the financial integrity and solvency of the organization, establishing procedures to safeguard the organization from fraud and risk, assuring that ethical standards are maintained, and remaining alert for signs of financial trouble.

In today’s world, the nonprofit sector is continually challenged to be more transparent, efficient and effective. Sensational headlines about a single nonprofit’s alleged wrong-doings can undermine the public’s confidence in the sector. “Why didn’t the governing board fix the situation before it was found out?” “How could something like this happen?”

Don’t let yourself be the one answering these types of questions!

While we all have internal definitions of “best interests” and “ethics”, many of us – because we are not trained as lawyers or CPAs or given adequate board orientation – may not have a full understanding of the true responsibilities inherent in this volunteer role.

This certificate program is designed to enhance the understanding of both novice and long-standing board members in the areas of governance, finance, fundraising and ethics. As a board member you are investing in your community. Becoming more fully knowledgeable about your roles and responsibilities in the boardroom through this program can have enormous impact on the value of that investment.

This certificate program is recommended for new and potential board members who are committed to becoming valuable leaders in their community through nonprofit board service.

You will leave with a governance toolkit which includes a set of resources and tools to help you govern more effectively.
