Mietek, a superstar in his own country, and one of the great singers in Europe celebrates his new cd, Signs, written and produced with American songwriter Wendy Waldman
The two met in Warsaw, Poland, in early 2007 --while attending a songwriters’ exchange program there. Waldman, who has worked with many great artists, says that from the first note Mietek sang in their very first meeting she knew she was hearing one of the finest voices she had ever heard. They began to collaborate on songs, traveling many times between Warsaw and Los Angeles, working with Mietek’s superb team of Polish musicians and writers, and Wendy’s equally superb team of American musicians and writers. Although there were significant cultural differences, the two artists found more and more that through writing, recording, performing and collaborating, the shared experience far outweighed the things that were different between them. As Mietek has said, “we are building a bridge.” This project took about five years to complete for many reasons, not the least being that Warsaw and Los Angeles are very far apart, and it’s an expensive, long commute!
“Signs” is at last being released, through Longhouse/MietekMusic--and features these wonderful musicians, writers and co-producers from Poland, the UK, and the US: people such as the legendary producer, writer and choir director HB Barnum with Life Choir, the late and much missed musical icon Kenny Edwards, world renown star Basia-who does a wonderful duet with Mietek on a very special song, great Nashville guitarist Brent Rowan, virtuoso pianist and producer Matt Rollings, Marcin Pospieszalski, legendary producer, bassist, film composer and folklorist in Poland, the stunning talent of Pawel Zarecki, producer, keyboard play also a legend in Poland, superb drummers Scott Babcock and Aaron Sterling--producer Piotr Kominek, the Refugees: Deborah Holland, Cidny Bullens and Waldman among others--along with wonderful co-writers....
All of this work and vision was spearheaded by Waldman and Mietek, and recorded and mixed by Robert Hoffman, who himself has some rather dazzling credentials.
Waldman points out that Poland is so young a country, and has been isolated from the west until twenty four years ago--we Americans have no idea yet, other than the few marvelous Polish jazz musicians and film composers who’ve broken through in the west--what a wonderful treat awaits us fans as more and more Polish musicians make their way here. Waldman also says that the Polish musicians are among the most educated and at the same time, the most soulful she’s ever worked with. Mietek embodies all of these qualities and more. And the bridge--the meeting between these two groups of musicians has created, as HB Barnum said after listening to the cd, “a new culture.”
