Boston - LexNoir Forum | Doing Business and Investing in Africa

Please join our community on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 6:00 PM EST  for the next LexNoir Forum in Boston, Massachusetts. We will address a number of substantive topics related to doing business and investing in Africa, feature domestic and international speakers throughout the African Diaspora and enjoy an evening of networking.

The forum topics and speakers for this particular event are as follows:

International Private Equity in Africa

Investors have targeted key African markets as attractive investment regions over some of their BRICS counterparts.  Increased interest in Africa, enhanced prospects for the African frontier markets and their improving performance over the past few years  have encouraged investors to look at Africa more closely.  Claude Roxborough, the Managing Partner of Wilson Harvey Browndorf's Washington, D.C. office and Co-Chair of the firm's International Division - Africa Practice, will discuss the role of private equity in African development and the type of bankable deals needed to obtain financing primarily in mid-size markets.

Developing Partnership Business Models to Do Business in Africa

Partnerships provide companies flexibility to enter new markets in Africa, giving them needed capacity, intellectual capital, resources, and capital.  However, partnerships are not an automatic win-win. Lauri Elliott, CEO of Afribiz Group,  Inc., will share strategies for improving the effectiveness of partnerships for doing business in Africa, using a partnering methodology developed by Afribiz.

Franchising in Africa

Franchising has experienced phenomenal growth around the world and Africa is no exception. The saturation of Western markets, the relaxation of trade barriers and the globalization of business have pushed franchisors to new African markets to distribute their products and services.  Kendal Tyre, a partner in the U.S. law firm of Nixon Peabody, will explore the growth of franchising in Africa and its implications for the continent.

Black Economic Empowerment - What Foreign Investors in South Africa Should Know

Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) is a program launched by the South African government to redress the inequalities of Apartheid by giving previously disadvantaged groups of South African citizens economic privileges previously not available to them. It includes measures such as Employment Preference, skills development, ownership, management, socioeconomic development, and preferential procurement. Taswell Papier, a partner in the South Africa law firm of ENS, will (via Skype) discuss the implications of these programs for foreign investors in South Africa.

This Forum is sponsored by Nixon Peabody LLP, LexNoir, AfriBiz, the International Law Section of the National Bar Association, Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and Region I of the National Bar Association.
