Workshop 1:
The Art, Craft, Business, and Ministry of Writing
From the outside looking in, writing can look deceptively easy. After all, we've all written something at some point in our lives. And if you go by the numerous ads one sees these days, anyone can get a book published in a matter of weeks. But how easy is it, really? Are there pitfalls unwary writers fall into? What about particular problems Canadian Christians face when they enter the publishing world?
Drawing from 20 plus years of experience in publishing, NJ will give you an insider's glimpse into the world of writing from four different perspectives.
N. J. Lindquist is an award-winning Canadian author and columnist. Her books include two adult mystery novels, five coming-of-age novels, three discipleship manuals for teens, and one play. She is also the editor and publisher of the bestselling anthology, Hot Apple Cider.
N. J. co-founded The Word Guild in 2002, and has directed Write! Canada since the fall of 2001. She has been involved in many aspects of The Word Guild, including judging the fiction manuscripts for the Best New Canadian Author Awards in both 2008 and 2009 and judging for the Grace Irwin Award in 2010.

Workshop 2:
What Writers Needs to Know about Trends in Publishing
How do eBooks work? What about POD (Print on Demand)? Is it a better option than having to invest in printing thousands of books? How much money would I make from these options, versus traditional royalty publishing or traditional self-publishing? How important is having a distributor to get my books into bookstores? Who is going to sell my book for me in this new age? What is affiliate marketing and should I do it?
You may have asked these questions. Les and N. J. surely have! The publishing industry is in flux and there are no definitive answers, but Les will share what he and N. J. have learned from their experiences publishing eight books, researching the issues, and talking to people about trends. From Les's experience as a change specialist for a leading multinational corporation, he'll also be sharing some of his ideas on how we can take advantage of current changes and leap forward.
Les Lindquist is a change consultant with 35 years' experience at IBM. He also writes, teaches workshops and speaks on change.
Les has played an instrumental role in The Word Guild since its inception, including serving as its treasurer. He is currently the chair of the board of Christian Info Canada, the ministry that includes The Word Guild. He is also advancing his own career as a consultant, writer, and speaker.
Les and N. J. are partners in That's Life! Communications.
