Desert Voices, Arizona's only nonprofit oral deaf education program, teaches children with hearing impairments to speak and to understand when others speak to them. Did you know hearing impairments are the most common disability found in newborns? More than 330 children in Arizona are diagnosed with a hearing loss each year. Through the use of hearing aids or cochlear implants, a deaf child can acquire sound, however, hearing technology alone does not mean that the child will learn to speak. The child must first learn how to listen and develop awareness of sound and language. For children with hearing impairments, language is taught - one sound at a time.
Desert Voices mission is to teach children the spoken language skills to talk and understand when others talk to them. In addition, the children are taught academics, including reading, math, science, and social studies. However, our program does not stop there. The ultimate goal for each student is to leave Desert Voices with age appropriate language skills so they can transition into a traditional school of their choice with hearing children their age. The average amount of time a child spends at Desert Voices is only 3 years, a true testament of the dedication of our staff, students and their families!
