CEIE: DP Walk & Talk – Birds & Botany with Pete Salmansohn and Anne Symmes
Pete Salmansohn and Anne Symmes walk and talk their worlds of birds and botany at Denning's Point. Sharing the excitement of being in the right place at the right time when walking through the woods, Pete's view as environmental educator and Anne's specialty of historic landscapes and native plants make for a filling lunchtime full of nature.
Environmental Educator Pete Salmansohn has worked with kids, families and seniors in places as diverse as the tundra of Churchill, Manitoba to the Redwoods of California. Fortunate for us, Pete is now focused on close-by Philipstown during the school year and coastal Maine in the summer. Known affectionately as "Puffin Pete", he has co-authored five fascinating books on birds, from Saving Birds: Heroes Around the World to Project Puffin: How We Brought Puffins Back to Egg Rock and three books in between.
Pete holds an M.S. in Teaching from the Environmental Studies Department of Antioch/New England Graduate School and works presently for the Hudson Highlands Land Trust, National Audubon, and the Garrison School. Join us Saturday, October 9th at noon for the right place and the right time in the woods.
Anne Cleves Symmes is a garden designer with a special interest in historic landscapes and native plants. She has designed the Ecokids Wildlife Learning Garden currently in progress at the Garrison Union Free School and is currently consulting on native plant habitats at the Bear Mountain Zoo. She is also Director of the Beatrix Farrand Garden Association a group dedicated to preserving a nationally significant landscape in Hyde Park, NY.
She grew up in Madison, Georgia working at Cedar Lane Farm, a family owned nursery and display garden that specialized in historic and native plants. After completing the landscape design program at the New York Botanical Garden, she pursued her interest in public gardens by working at Bryant Park and the Conservatory Garden in New York City as both a gardener and garden educator.
