SDRC's Starting Line for May 2010

Dear SDRC'ers, Family Members and Friends:

Here is NEWSGRAM # 3 to share key information, planning events for the Month, and notable SDRC Community items.

 * Please let us know what you think of the new Newsgram format - we'll adapt to suit your needs.

Thanks as always, for helping our Club prepare for it's next 125 Years!

Honor our Past, Execute in the Present, Anticipate our Future.

Answers to Some of your Great Boathouse Questions:

Question 1.

Do my friends and I have to ROW to enjoy the GARTY PARTY held each Thursday @ 6:30 pm?

Answer: Au contraire - mon ami. Rowing is not the only thing in life that matters.   Viewers, revelers and grill helpers are always welcomed by Sean and Oscar. Priceless!

Question 2

Is the GARTY Pavilion available for Juniors’ Graduation parties this summer?

Answer: Absolutely.  Your Club also extends a discounted Club Rate for June – July too.

Question 3:

I heard that our initial Olympic Colloquium was a success. Is there another Colloquium planned?

Answer: Yes – on Wednesday June 2nd!

SDRC Member - Chris DuPraw, PhD. -   knows good calories.  She will be our principal speaker to correlate good diet and elite racing success.  A Social half hour will begin at 6 pm and the program begins at 6:30. See you then and there (GARTY Pavilion).

        i.      Watts per kilogram of body weight serve as a natural law (of sorts) for success in our Sport.

Please RSVP to sandiegorc@sbcglobal.net or 858.488.1893 so that we can provide enough refreshments for all.  Thanks!

Question 4:

Will the SDRC Masters be racing in Oakland on July 10th?

Answer: Yes – do plan to race regularly and often for our Southwest Regionals.  There are so many blings to steal from Marin and Long Beach!

Question 5:

Is there a Summer Cleaning Day @ the Coggeshall Center?

Answer: Yes and No. We plan to have TWO Field Days (in the military sense).  Both Saturday and Sunday (June 19 and June 20) are needed to address our boat, exterior and interior work lists.  Big Brother will be taking attendance.  Hunter Butler, John Read,  Chris Feuge and Mark Davis are our main battery for this important Club event. Stay tuned.

A Power Ten from the Engine Room:

1. Congratulations to all SDRC Juniors for season successes. Special KUDOs to our crews that qualified for Junior Nationals next month.

2. Over sixty folks heard the Olympic journeys of “our very own” Luke Walton and Dan Walsh at our first Colloquium in April.

  1. Think about three training pillars that helped Luke and the CAL Crew cruise through FOUR undefeated collegiate seasons:

                                                              i.      Crushing power

                                                            ii.      Uncompromising Style

                                                          iii.      Great Morale

Don’t forget perseverance and humor that Dan stressed are mandatory to achieve progressive success in this crazy sport.

3. When you next see a member of our Club’s Finance Committee – please take a moment to thank him or her. Treasurer Margaret Smiddy, Chris Feuge, Karen Ladner and Mario Petrocco deserve all of our thanks.

Why this recognition?  For their countless hours of work to baseline our complex budget and improve our business processes.

4. Speaking of thank-you’s: Sean and Oscar are to be recognized and thanked for six (as of today) GARTY PARTY events on Thursday evenings.  Well, we "moved" Thursday  last week to Wednesday to celebrate that American holiday – Cinco de Mayo. The “Beer Races” of about 500 meters are spirited and the Barbeques are tasty.  Camaraderie of young and not-so-young participants has been great. Your priceless bayfront setting is worth the donated price of admission. Do join us when you can to enjoy these lighter / longer evenings

5. SAFETY: Among outriggers, fishing boats, stand-up paddlers, kayakers, water skiers and our Crews – our shared Bay can be very crowded. Please Think SAFETY First and always.

6. Do fulfill your responsibilities to reserve Boats before taking them out and for signing out for every water session.  Please!

7. Do take a moment to enter every Repair request in our Log situated on the "podium". Walter and Art are very good but they aren’t mind readers – so do let them know when a scull or shell isn’t up to par.

8. Your Club will Host / participate in the National Learn to Row Day on June 5th

Why not ask a friend or three to come on down to SDRC and see what magic draws you to our sport (even in the dark)?

9. Another special thank-you to Mae Ann Garty. for her generous contribution to provide heat lamps and their storage: nicely expanding our hospitality potential.  We have been blessed with perfect weather for our last two major social events, but there will come a day . . .

10. Please don’t think that anyone has to wait until a quarterly Clean-up Day to lend a little time and elbow grease to maintain the appearance and features of our fine Center.

Facts:

Tom Cook really doesn’t have to sweep apron sand by himself.

  1. Chris "green thumb" Feuge is not the only Gardener in our ranks.

  • We accept all Volunteers (and have registered with Volunteer San Diego, by the way, to get OTHER helping hands).

An UPDATE from last month:

Dan is taking our next round of tax deductible Brick Orders (Remember that split orders by multiple Club membetrs are perfectly acceptable).

You'll soon see our new order of Commemorative Bricks inserted  on the GARTY Pavilion floor.

You can view Pavilion Comfort Chairs with mini-plaques that cite 2009 outgoing Board members and other noteworthy recipients.

> Why not get your very own chair and get a $75 tax deductible credit?

See Dan for an easy-to-complete Purchase form.

Have a merry month of May - on our water and off.
