9:45 a.m. - The Role of Single-Family Mortgage Finance in Stabilizing Metro Neighborhoods

Atlanta Community Food BankSuccessful recovery in neighborhoods struggling with foreclosures and vacant homes is dependent on the availability of single-family mortgage financing.  But the current credit market (tightened credit standards, higher mortgage insurance costs, and limited purchase/rehab loan products) is leaving prospective homeowners on the sidelines.

With limited NSP funds and credit for rehabilitation limited, investment activity appears dominated by cash-purchases.  What financing products are needed to ensure that struggling neighborhoods are not overrun by absentee landlords and vacant, blighted homes?

Our panelists will provide a response from the lending community, focusing on the current state of single-family credit availability in our communities, particularly those most impacted by foreclosures and vacancies.
