Track Introductions

The content portion of the Parish Ministries Conference will be presented in three tracks plus the Young Adult Rally. As an attendee you are able to participate in sessions across multiple tracks. You are not required to select and stay in one track.

Sessions will provide unique opportunities to interact with leaders and other participants to maximize your ability to leave with important information and experiences that you can put into practice in your parish in in our life.

Track One

Living an Orthodox Life

Sessions offer insights and suggestions for adults of all ages who want to live their Orthodox faith in today's world.
  • Discerning Spiritual Gifts: God provide people in the Church with the necessary gifts to upbuild the community. The communal life is always in relations to what the needs of the community are, not our personal needs. What are the spiritual gifts that you have to offer? - Metropolitan Jonah
  • Meeting Muslims: Presenting our Orthodox Faith in a Multi-faith World - Matushka Valerie Zahirsky
  • "Male and Female Created He Them": Understanding Human Existence and Relations Between the Sexes in the Modern World- Archpriest John Behr, Dean St. Vladimir's Seminary
  • Youth in Crisis:  Identifying issues young people face, recognizing depression and hte warning signs for suicide, and offering support in times of grief -  Matushka Myra Kovalak and Matushka Alexandra Safchuk.
  • Abortion: The Discussion, The Tragedy, The Alternatives - An Orthodox Christian Response from Scripture and Tradition - Daria Petrykowski and a Panel including a board member of ZOE for life, a high school guidance counselor and an Orthodox priest who is on the board of a local pregnancy center.
  • Being Disciples By Making Disciples: Orthodoxy and International Missions Kenneth Kidd, of Orthodox Christian Mission Center
  • The Welcoming Parish - More Than a Hello: Nurturing Those With Exceptionalities, Supporting the Aging and Encouraging Parishoners in Sickness and in Health- Veronica Bilas, Maria Proch and Jewelann Stefanar


Track Two

Building Vibrant Parishes

 The Buiding Vibrant Parishes track will tackle practical issues associated with helping parishes to be communities where Christ's presence is noticeable to all who enter and where each person’s spiritual gifts can blossom.

Track Three

Liturgical Music

Drillock directing
The two tracts in Liturgical Music will offer workshops for both new and experienced singers and beginning and advanced choir directors and liturgical composers.  Topics will include: 
 Styles and techniques of reading the Epistle (together with intoning Prokeimena and Alleluia verses) and psalm chanting – presented by Vladimir Morosan
 Fundamentals of Choral Conducting, (for the beginning conductor) with emphasis on metric beat patterns, musical phrasing, and interpretation of a variety of liturgical styles – presented by David Drillock
 Advanced Choral Conducting, (for those who are currently directing church choirs) with special emphasis on irregular or asymetrical rhythmic patterns as found in chant patterns – presented by Mark Bailey
 Composition I: Text-setting and textual structures.  Techniques in melodic, polyphonic, and diatonic harmonic construction – presented by Mark Bailey
 Composition II: Establishing thematic material and achieving musical cohesion within a composition; the harmonization of chant melodies. Use of transposition, non-harmonic chords, and complex harmonies – presented by Mark Bailey
(Composers will have an opportunity to present their work from these two sessions toward the end of the conference.)
 Essential elements of good vocal production: breathing, vocal tone, and diction, especially as they relate to church singing – presented by Vladimir Morosan
 Tutorial for learning the Church tones: Study and analysis of the L’vov-Bakhmetev (Common Chant) and Kievan Chant systems, with emphasis on appropriate text-setting and proper use of musical patterns associated with each individual tone – presented by David Drillock
 Essentials of Music Literacy: tools and techniques for developing basic musical literacy essential for Orthodox worship – presented by Vladimir Morosan
