The two tracts in Liturgical Music will offer workshops for both new and experienced singers and beginning and advanced choir directors and liturgical composers. Topics will include:
• Styles and techniques of reading the Epistle (together with intoning Prokeimena and Alleluia verses) and psalm chanting – presented by Vladimir Morosan
• Fundamentals of Choral Conducting, (for the beginning conductor) with emphasis on metric beat patterns, musical phrasing, and interpretation of a variety of liturgical styles – presented by David Drillock
• Advanced Choral Conducting, (for those who are currently directing church choirs) with special emphasis on irregular or asymetrical rhythmic patterns as found in chant patterns – presented by Mark Bailey
• Composition I: Text-setting and textual structures. Techniques in melodic, polyphonic, and diatonic harmonic construction – presented by Mark Bailey
• Composition II: Establishing thematic material and achieving musical cohesion within a composition; the harmonization of chant melodies. Use of transposition, non-harmonic chords, and complex harmonies – presented by Mark Bailey
• (Composers will have an opportunity to present their work from these two sessions toward the end of the conference.)
• Essential elements of good vocal production: breathing, vocal tone, and diction, especially as they relate to church singing – presented by Vladimir Morosan
• Tutorial for learning the Church tones: Study and analysis of the L’vov-Bakhmetev (Common Chant) and Kievan Chant systems, with emphasis on appropriate text-setting and proper use of musical patterns associated with each individual tone – presented by David Drillock
• Essentials of Music Literacy: tools and techniques for developing basic musical literacy essential for Orthodox worship – presented by Vladimir Morosan
