"Novel Approaches to Autism Research and Treatment Across the Life Span

Autism diagnosis and Treatments are moving targets. This lecture will present Basic Overview of emerging research in Autism in both Conventional and Alternative Medicine.

Karen Umstead, M.Ed, BCBA Executive Director of Beautiful Minds of Princeton, Karen has presented workshops here and around the world on autism, behavior, and social skills. This brief overview of the behavioral approach to treating autism will include discussion of teaching methodologies (e.g. discrete trial instruction, natural environment training, etc) and a behavioral approach to language. Additionally participants will learn the common reasons for problem behavior and considerations when intervening to treat problem behavior.

Kenneth A. Bock, M.D., received his M.D. with Honor from the University of Rochester, School of Medicine, in 1979.  He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is a clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine at Albany Medical College.  For more than 25 years, he has dealt with complex medical problems by integrating alternative modalities with conventional medicine into a comprehensive integrative medical practice, and for the last nine years he has focused that approach on children with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, asthma and allergies.  Dr. Bock’s Healing Program is at the vanguard of the new biomedical approach to the treatment of children affected by these disorders.  He is the co-author of Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies (Random House).  He lectures nationally and internationally on immune system health and integrative approaches to autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, asthma and allergies.

Title: "The Broad Spectrum of Autism".

The incidence of autism and ADHD has skyrocketed in the last 20 years.  There is much recent evidence to support the premise that these disorders arise at a nexus of environmental and genetic influences.  An individualized treatment approach, including behavioral and educational interventions, along with nutritional and pharmacologic therapies, coupled with limitation of environmental exposures and detoxification, can result in significant clinical improvements, and in some cases, even recovery.  This lecture will address possible causes for the increase in autism and ADHD, including proliferation of environmental toxins, as well as strategies for treatment.
