The goal of the symposium is to inform stakeholders and other interested parties about the progress that wind power has made in the region over the past few years and opportunities for the future.  The Symposium will address timely issues pertaining to wind power development in Virginia and throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region, through a series of workshops and panel discussions.  Workshops will be offered the morning of the 16th and the afternoon of the 17th.  Planned workshop topics include; a small wind installation, a National Energy Education Development teacher training, VRS3, Ordinance Writing, and Wind for Schools.  Tracks covering Wind Issues, Workforce and Education, Utility Scale Wind, and Small/Community sized wind will be offered concurrently on the 16th and 17th.  Session topics will include issues such as property values and wildlife issues, as well as provide an overview of projects in Virginia a discussion of available technology.

National Education Energy Development (NEED) Teacher Workshop (No cost/free 1 day registration)

Navigating the Permit by Rule

10:30a-12p    This workshop will present and field questions regarding the proposed wind Permit By Rule, including the steps for applicants.  There will also be a panel discussion concerning how this process would work from the developer's point of view including practical analysis by developers who served on the Wind Regulatory Advisory Panel and understand implications of the proposed regulation for developers. Virginia Renewable Scoring System for Siting (VRS3) & Ordinance Writing

9a-12p    This workshop will demonstrate the VRS3 tool, how it was created, how it functions, and how it can be applied to the benefit of local government. This workshop aims to inform local government and county planners about the importance of wind ordinances and give them access to experts on wind as well as examples of working ordinances in Virginia.  It will also identify items to include in ordinances and review the process that was successful in Rockingham County.  Leaders:  Maria Papadakis &  Jonathan Miles, James Madison University

 

Small Wind Installation

9a-12p     This workshop will demonstrate, step by step, how to install a small wind turbine on one’s property including siting.  Leader: Dale D’Alissandro, Chesapeake Renewable Energy; Pramod Jain, Innovative Wind Energy, Inc.

    5:30-6:30p    In 2002, The Virginia Wind Energy Collaborative (VWEC) was established with support from the US Department of Energy - WInd Powering America and the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy - Energy Division.  VEC was formed to identify and address the key barriers within the Commonwealth to the deployment of wind energy systems.  Both culture and political climate in Virginia have changed during this decade; likewise, efforts to support wind development at a county and/or community level must be re-evaluated.  All who wish to participate in a conversation that addresses opportunities to employ education, outreach, and development of resources in support of wind energy throughout the Commonwealth are welcome and encouraged to join this session.  Leader:  Jonathan Miles, James Madison University
