This camp is designed for students in rising math grades 5 - 7 who will take Pre-Algebra in the fall. Advanced 5th graders are also accepted if they pass a qualifying exam. In this camp, students will learn important pre-algebra concepts. Math competition problems are used to enhance pre-algebra skills. The focus is to learn how to solve multistep word problems and important problem solving topics in patterns, sequences, series, counting, prime numbers, divisibility, remainders, and geometry of areas. Students will also learn important mental math skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals.
To make learning fun, students will also participate in math games and hands-on activities such as 24!, Rubik's cube, Tetrahedron construction, Math Magic! and Ken-Ken. They will also experience math competitions such as California Math League, Math Olympiad and AMC 8 contests.
Participants will be eligible to enroll in E210 - Introductory Math Competition or E110 - Honors Pre-Algebra Problem Solving class during 2010 - 2011 school year.
