The Power of Dialogue: Constructive Conversations on Divisive Issues (Washington, DC)

The Power of Dialogue (POD) is a highly interactive workshop that combines teaching and experiential learning for practitioners and leaders. Participants will build upon and expand their facilitation skills, allowing them to more effectively create conversations that foster mutual understanding between groups and individuals.

Discuss:
  • the dynamics of polarization and conflict, and the ways that strong emotion affects our ability to communicate.
  • the ways of speaking, listening, and asking questions that open up conversation and relationships.
  • the difference between a speaker's intent and the impact on the listener.
Learn:
  • the elements of PCP’s dialogue practice—preparation, communication agreements, structures, and questions.
Experience:
  • the stages of dialogue—preparing, facilitating, and participating—via an extended dialogue simulation.
  • the “dialogic” mindset, or the ability to create a space for multiple complex or conflicting views.

Workshop Policies

Sliding Scale Fee: PCP's sliding scale for training fees reflects our commitment to creating a more inclusive society. As a not-for-profit organization funded largely by individual donations, we hope that those who can afford it will register at a higher end of the fee range. We encourage for-profit organizations to treat the upper price limit as our standard workshop fee, as it most accurately reflects the true cost and value of PCP trainings.

Payment Policy: Your space is guaranteed only upon receipt of full payment. Once payment is received, we will send an information packet in the mail to confirm your registration.

If You Cancel: Cancellations are a challenge. Last-minute vacancies can be difficult to fill, and we have already prepared materials, ordered food, made financial commitments, etc. Therefore, if you must cancel, please do so as far in advance as possible. Please note that cancellations are subject to a $25 administration fee and must be made at least 2 weeks prior to the course date to receive any refund. PCP is under no obligation to offer any refund or credit if you cancel within two weeks of a workshop. If you need to cancel due to a medical emergency or local weather conditions, please call the Registrar at (617) 923-1216 ext. 13.

Substitutions: If you cannot attend and wish to send someone in your place, call the Registrar at (617) 923-1216 ext. 13. You must be ready to register your substitute at the time of your call. Substitutions must be made at least 5 days in advance. The new participant must complete the registration and preparation processes that are unique to each workshop.

If We Cancel: In very rare instances, PCP must cancel a workshop due to low enrollment, faculty illness or weather. In the very unlikely event that PCP has to cancel a workshop due to low enrollment, we will give you at least 3 weeks notice. If we cancel due to faculty illness, we will contact you as far in advance as possible. If we cancel a workshop at the last minute due to weather, we will leave a message on our voicemail. If the weather forecast calls for a severe storm in the area in which the workshop will be held, a decision about whether to cancel the workshop will be made by 4:00pm on the day before. Please call (617) 923-1216 and press 13 to hear the message. If the workshop is canceled, we will issue you a full refund. No administration fees will be charged if we cancel a workshop. We cannot be responsible for travel losses.
