DEBBIE BRADY ROBINSON,  Artist/Instructor TYBEE ISLAND, & SAVANNAH, GA

AREA AND WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

TYBEE ISLAND, & SAVANNAH, GA

Tybee Island is where Award winning artist, Debbie Brady Robinson, grew up; durng what she refers to as, Tybee Times in the 20th Century. Many of Debbie’s great fun-filled Tybee Island adventures took place on Horsepen Creek; one of Debbie’s favorite painting venues, off the back river and west side of the island! Influenced by the breath taking sunsets, coupled with the glorious sunrise vistas’s over the Atlantic Ocean, Debbie‘s paintings capture the vibrant colors of her little Tybee Island paradise, where she lives and operates her business, The Atantic Beacon Gallery!

Workshops:

The cost of each class is less than $15 per hour, per student; for each three day session. Half is due upon reistration, and the balance is due by the first day of each workshop. Credit Cards are the preferred method of payment. Class size is limited to 12 students per class. Upon enrollment, each student will be sent a syllabus of paints, brushes and materials that Debbie works with on a daily basis. Debbie uses a limited pallet, so the cost of supplies is not overly expensive. Paint will be availble for use by each student, but each artist is free to use his or her own existing paint on hand, as well.

#1 - PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING (Painting On Location, Outdoors)
#2 - ACRYLIC PAINTING (Painting Wet On Wet with Acrylic)
Each Workshop runs for three consecutive days; eight hours  per day, including a break for lunch. Discounts and suggestions for lodging accomodations  will be provided for those students joining us from out of town. Debbie will conduct a painting demonstration, on location (weather permitting), each morning of the workshop. Classes will be held in doors, should the elements prohibit painting outside.

Daily workshops begin with three or four hours of instructive painting by Debbie. Students will learn by observation during the morning sessions, followed by a  break for lunch. Students are free to do as they wish, or go to lunch as a group; coupons and discounts, from local restaurants, will be provided. The afternoon session concludes with up to four hours of painting on location by each student/artist. Every Artist will choose a different scene, of their choice, each day. Debbie will observe and make constructive criticisms as each Artist creates his or her own finished painting.

Elements that are explained and demonstrated in each workshop are: Composition & Design, Perspective, Sketching, Color, Value, Medium, and tools of the trade. The plein-air artist faces numerous challenges while on location. Achieving a workable solution for the lighting situation, the type of climate and various changing elements are the goals of this workshop. Classes are informative, and fun; Debbie’s style is positive and upbeat, encouraging a light-hearted and pleasant learning atmosphere for all.

ON LOCATION; Plein-Air Painting:

1.) Bring an umbrella
2,) Always wear a suntan screen
3.) Wear a hat to shade your eyes
4.) Always have bug spray with you
5.) Wear shoes that protect your feet
6.) A light weight folding stool/chair to sit on during the         demonstration
7.) A note pad to take notes.
8.) Check the weather for appropriate attire for that region so you are not roasting or freezing.

The sketch pad or note pad is always a handy item to have with you for the times when Debbie unveils those all important “Ah Ha” techniques!

ASSEMBLING YOUR EQUIPMENT FOR PLEIN AIR PAINTING.  Debbie explains the reasons behind her choices for equipment. As Debbie sets up for the demonstration she will explain how to make this process simple. What to cart with you for your painting session is a choice you have to make each time you are painting. Lugging too much weight will hinder your energy level. How to protect the painting during its development and after it is finished will be a topic worth noting. Frequently when you are not accustomed to handling paintings outdoors or indoors you set yourself up for a blunder that can be disappointing after all your efforts.
