Sweetwater Creek is a peaceful tract of wilderness only minutes from bustling downtown Atlanta. There are actually 4 trails. We will hike the Blue trail, rated easy to moderate, as it winds through several lovely stream coves and follows the ridges overlooking Sweetwater Creek. We will continue to the end where it intersects with the Red trail, past the New Manchester mill ruins.
At the point where it picks up the Red trail, the terrain, fairly quickly, becomes 'difficult.' Although the Red trail is rated easy to difficult, this is where it is the most difficult. If you don't think you will feel comfortable going through this difficult part which is right on the creek and quite rocky, the Blue trail can be taken back to the mill ruins to pick up the easy part of the Red trail. It is a wonderful trail alongside the creek.
You will no doubt want to enjoy the serenity of the creek and enjoy nature and the wonders of God. The total hike should take less than 3 hours...as always, we are as fast as the slowest person.
Just a reminder to wear comfortable layered clothing, hiking boots or sturdy comfortable (not new) shoes. Bring water and snacks. We will carpool from the IHOP on Thornton Rd. (Exit 44 off I-20W), our meeting place. Please be sure to have at least $5 to contribute to the driver for gas. Pick up a parking pass at the library or be prepared to help with the parking fee...it is between $3 - $5.
