Amory Lovins, has been called "one of the Western world's most influential energy thinkers" by Newsweek, will speak at Keppel Auditorium at 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 23. He is the Rocky Mountain Institute's cofounder, chairman and chief scientist.
Time magazine called Lovins one of 2009's 100 most influential people in the world. The Wall Street Journal named him one of 39 people worldwide "most likely to change the course of business in the '90s."
An experimental physicist educated at Harvard and Oxford, Lovins leads Rocky Mountain Institute, a market-oriented, entrepreneurial, nonprofit, nonpartisan "think-and-do tank." He has lately led the redesign of more than $30 billion worth of facilities in 29 sectors for radical energy and resource efficiency.
Lovins has briefed 20 heads of state and held several visiting academic chairs, most recently as 2007 MAP/Ming Professor in Stanford University's School of Engineering. He has written 29 books and hundreds of papers, advised the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense and consulted for scores of industries and governments worldwide.
A MacArthur Fellow, Lovins has received numerous awards, including the "Alternative Nobel," Blue Planet, Volvo, Onassis, Nissan, Shingo and Mitchell Prizes and 10 honorary doctorates.
The presentation is free and open to the public, but registration is necessary.
Donations in the form of cash or checks* will be accepted at the event. All proceeds will be used to provide scholarship assistance to participants in the National Youth Environmental Summit (Y.E.S.) 2011 – a joint venture between the Center for the Environment at Catawba College and Rocky Mountain Institute. In summer 2011, approximately 200 young leaders from across the nation will come together on the Catawba College campus. Using a whole systems thinking philosophy, they will explore sustainable solutions to our world’s prevalent environmental challenges.
