Our feature speaker, Penny Simkin will present a full day seminar based on her best selling book, "When Survivors Give Birth". Understanding and Healing the Effects of Trauma and Sexual Abuse on Childbearing Women.
This workshop is for doctors, midwives, nurses, social workers, mental health
providers, doulas, childbirth educators, breastfeeding counselors, and health visitors who work with women during their childbearing years.
As a doula, midwife, doctor or other practitioner or therapist in the field of pregnancy and childbirth, you will be working with women at a very vulnerable time in their lives. Many will have past or present histories of sexual abuse or physical violence which can profoundly influence their emotional and psychological state and determine whether birth is a healing or further traumatising event.
Day one is designed to acquaint participants with the impact of sexual abuse and other types of trauma on women’s pregnancies, labor, birth, breastfeeding and parenting experiences. Specific counseling techniques for minimizing the negative impact of trauma and providing appropriate and informed support will be introduced.
Day two is for direct service providers who attended the previous day and want hands on practice with indepth counseling techniques. This is done in a much smaller group of a maximum of 35 people. This is in addition to Day 1 and cannot be attended on it's own.
About:
This workshop, facilitated by Penny Simkin, one of the internationally recognised leaders in this field, will explore the many issues surrounding childhood sexual abuse and its impact on adult lives, childbearing women and those caring for them. Practical strategies for developing positive relationships, good communication skills and self-help techniques for pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postpartum period will be included. Penny has devoted much of her forty year career to exploring the impact of early trauma on pregnant women in the US maternity care system and developing strategies to avoid retraumatization during birth and facilitate the process of healing.
Aims:
*To explore the issue of sexual abuse (SA) and its impact on women when they give birth
*To examine common manifestations of SA survivors during pregnancy and birth
*To develop strategies that can be used by maternity care providers to support SA survivors during labour and birth
*To describe useful self-help techniques that can be used by survivors of SA.
Learner outcomes:
By the end of this program, participants will be able to:
*Define “sexual abuse (SA).”
*Describe possible effects of sexual abuse on a child’s brain development and how it may be manifested in adulthood, including pregnancy and childbearing.
*Compare pros and cons of ways to elicit a history of sexual abuse.
*List common challenges in the clientcaregiver relationship that may have roots in SA.
*List specific ways maternity care providers may help survivors during labour.
*Discuss practical strategies to avoid, reduce, or manage anticipated triggers during labour and birth.
*Describe useful self-help techniques to reduce symptoms for survivors.
*List techniques for childbirth educators & caregivers to build confidence in abuse survivors.
