Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment, Control and Optimization for the Operations Professional

Wastewater treatment is a necessary and noble profession, and operations professionals want to get better at what they do for their own professional development and as stewards of ratepayer money. The objective of this class is twofold: to clarify and simplify the obscure and confusing information that is currently passed onto operators as knowledge, and to distill the science of wastewater treatment into a cohesive framework from which systematic, consistent process control strategies can be developed and continuously refined that will improve and stabilize plant performance while making operators’ jobs more effective and efficient. The class will give attendees the scientific knowledge needed to abandon old-school ideas, worn out rules of thumb, and that’s-the-way-we’ve-always-done-it mentality.

In the context of a basic activated sludge wastewater treatment plant with primary clarifiers and anaerobic digesters, the following topics will be covered: wastewater characteristics and their affect on primary clarifier performance; microbial energetics; the importance and measurement of sludge quality in the activated sludge process; air, WAS and RAS flow optimization; nutrient removal; the importance of stability, consistency and uniformity in anerobic digester operation; data variability and its necessity in process control; and optimization.
