DESCRIPTION: In working with individuals facing either the future death of a loved one through life-threatening illness or the death of a loved one that has already taken place, professionals & volunteers can over focus on the death itself to the exclusion of other losses that transpire along with or because of it. The practical & clinically-oriented workshop focuses on these non-death losses that are inherent elements of anticipatory mourning as well as of post-death bereavement. An overarching conceptualization will be presented & then strategies for approaching non-death losses will be offered, along with specific tips for intervention. OUTLINE: Fundamental concepts regarding death & non-death losses; The post-death experience; Anticipatory mourning-the pre-death experience; Managing cumulative loss. OBJECTIVES: Identify & describe the two main categories of loss & their implications for the bereaved; Explain the relationship between trauma & loss; List at least six strategies for intervention in post-death bereavement; Explain the creation of non-death losses during the anticipatory mourning interval; Identify at least three strategies to contend with cumulative loss.
