The FBI's PRC Counterintelligence Mission: An Evolving Concern 

Join us for a discussion on how the evolution of the FBI’s understanding of the goals and intentions of the People's Republic of China (PRC) led it to reevaluate the nature of its counterintelligence mission, and by extension the US Government’s approach to the PRC.

Joshua Obstfeld, Senior Supervisory Intelligence Analyst (SSIA) for the FBI's Newark Field Office, will highlight the unique role of the FBI within the Intelligence Community, and the critical role played by the FBI’s intelligence program in driving and executing the FBI’s mission.

As the SSIA for the Newark Field Office, Obstfeld manages the FBI’s intelligence and linguist program for the majority of the state of New Jersey.  Prior to this role, Obstfeld served in Washington, DC as the FBI’s Senior National Intelligence Officer for China.  He joined the FBI in 2005, and led analytic teams in its Directorate of Intelligence from 2009 to 2012, and in its counterintelligence division from 2012 to July 2020.  He holds an M.A. in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a B.A. in political science from Johns Hopkins University.
