2018 ChalkHeART
Statewide Challenge

Middle School, Junior High, and High School Art Teachers!
 
 
 

Join us for our 7th Annual Statewide ChalkHeART Challenge created for middle school, junior high, and high schools from around the state.

Here’s how it works: Any Idaho public or private middle, junior high or high school may enter teams comprising of one to four students. Each team should select a poem to illustrate with chalk from:

  • The We Choose All of Us poem is available here.
  • The middle/junior high poem book is available here and at your school library.
  • The high school poem book is available here and at your school library.

***Bonus Points*** for selecting an award-receiving poem (found on pages 7-15 of the middle/junior high book and pages 7-17 of the high school book) or a poem from your school

***EXTRA Bonus Points*** for selecting the We Choose All of Us poem.

Does your submission educate and inspire youth to end gender violence? Does your artwork represent the message of the selected poem? Select a poem like the Stories of Transformation Award recipients (pages 7-15 in the middle/junior high poem book and pages 7-17 in the high school poem book), or the We Choose All of Us poem. 

Here’s how you win: Amazing local artists will select our Statewide ChalkHeART Award Recipients at the LIVE event on Thursday, May 3rd 2018. ChalkHeART teams must be in compliance with event rules (see below) to be considered for awards!

Register soon: Submit the online registration as soon as you can. registration will close and art is due Friday, April 27th.

Please email Yara a high-resolution photo of your art at yara@engagingvoices.org by the end of the day on Friday, April 27th, 2018.

Guidelines & Rules for Chalk Artists

1) Your team must be registered to chalk . Use a chalkboard space approximately 4 ft. by 4 ft. 

2) Illustrate one of the poems. Teams can be comprised of one to four students. Every student on a team should be from the same school or art program.  Teachers/leaders can coach during the competition, but cannot participate in the chalking. No words may appear within the art. ChalkHeART reserves the right to refuse objectionable material. Whether an illustration includes objectionable material will be determined at the discretion of the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence. 

3) You may use your own chalk but it must be water-basedNo paint, crayon, ink or other non-washable or permanent productsNo fixatives may be used on the chalk drawings. If you are not sure what you can bring, call and ask. If you need help with chalk and other supplies, please let us know!

4) Judging - Each team will be evaluated by Idaho-based artists and scored based on the following criteria: originality, representation of poem, and overall presentation. Bonus points will be given to teams depicting award-receiving poems or a poem from your school and extra bonus points will be given to teams who depict the We Choose All Of US poem. In the event of a tie the judges will reevaluate the tied ChalkHeART art according to the criteria until the tie is broken.

5) By submitting your teams’ entry, the team leader/teacher certifies that the team is submitting its own, non-copyrighted work. The team leader/teacher nor team members/artists are not entitled to payment for your submission, unless awarded a prize in accordance with the rules for judging. By submitting a chalk illustration, the team leader/teacher and artists are granting the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence and its funders the right to use the entry and other information provided with the entry as it sees fit, to the extent allowed by law, including posting on ourgenderevolution.org, duplication in the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence materials, and in other manner or medium now or hereafter known or devised. The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence, has the sole discretion in determining the extent and manner of use of submissions and is not obligated to use any submissions.
