Diving in Mahahual

Situated on the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world, the Meso American Barrier Reef!!  Costa Maya
which is geographically located from the southern border of Sian Ka’an Biosphere south to Mahahual, Baclar, and Xcalak.  Mahahual is one of the best kept secrets for dive destinations.

Visit Maya Palms Beach Estate and Mahahual for virgin pristine untouched reefs, where the reef is just 400 yards or less off shore.  Divers will discover a unique spur and groove coral formation with numerous fingers creating vast deep canyons, grooves and swim through's.  This is a unique dive experience because not only are you diving on one of the few remaining unspoiled reefs but with a wall of coral on both sides of you.  With a significant amount of the reef unexplored you may just be diving a site no one has before.  Diving here is perfect for the serious divers looking for multiple days of diving adventure to the inexperienced diver and snorkeler because of the 3 rows of reef parallel to shore.  The inner most reef is perfect for snorkelers, students and discover diving; while the outer two reefs are extraordinary for divers of all levels and can’t be beat. You’ll see huge barrel sponges and vast amounts of soft corals, moving slowly with the gentle current. The wide variety of marine life, includes turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, trunk fish, blue tang, parrot fish, moray eels and lobsters just to name a few.

Diving conditions:  Water depth inside the shallow reef is 15 to 20 feet, with depths on the middle
barrier reef ranging 40 to 120 feet.  There are a lot of sloping walls and second-step walls, allowing divers to choose their own profiles.  Visibility varies with weather conditions but is generally between 60 to 100+ feet.  Diving the Barrier Reef is year-round, much as it is in Cozumel.  During the winter occasional northeasters blow in which can affect the diving for a few days.  Summer months generally have light winds and provide optimal sea conditions.  March and April are our windiest months, but we still dive every day.  Water temperatures over the course of the year range from the upper 70’s in the winter to highs in the 80's in the summer.

Snorkeling

Our Costa Maya Snorkeling Excursion offers a great way to see the best of Mahahual and Costa Maya, both above and below the water surface.

Our snorkeling tours depart from our picturesque resort. The tour takes you away from it all to one of the best snorkeling areas along the barrier reef where you will see an abundance of tropical fish and the best coral formations on the coast.

A quick 5-10 minute journey by boat will transport you to the snorkeling site, a pristine coral reef that boasts spectacular Elk Coral, schools of brightly colored Blue Tangs and a multitude of species of tropical fish. Spotted Eagle Rays, stingrays and sea turtles frequent this site so keep your eyes open! Non Diving Attractions

Day Trips can be arranged at Maya Palms

Chacchoben Ruins: Visitors to the site today walk a circular path that includes three excavated and restored pyramids, as well as many walls and staircases.  Excavation is continuing on several mounds which are known to contain further buildings.  Some structures still bear traces of the red paint with which they were originally coated.  Also notable at the base of the largest pyramid is a large stone slab called a Stella with a Mayan hieroglyphic inscription. Chacchoben is one of the more popular ruin sites only 1 hour from Maya Palms.  For information on other ruins please click.

Lake Bacalar:  On a sunny day, you will see why Laguna Bacalar is Lake Baclarknown as the "Lake of the Seven Colors". The white sandy bottom turns the  crystalline water pale turquoise in shallow areas, morphing to vivid turquoise and through a spectrum to deep indigo in the deeper center. Colors shift with the passing of the day, making a mesmerizing backdrop.

Considered Mexico's second-largest lake, Bacalar is actually a lagoon, with a series of waterways  leading eventually to the ocean. Fed not by surface runoff but by underground cenotes, it is almost 31 miles long.

The town of Bacalar is quiet and traditional. There's not a lot of action in town, but you shouldn't miss the Fuerte San Felipe  Bacalar, built in 1733 to protect the Spanish from the pirates and Maya  rebels who regularly raided the area.

Bird Watching:  If you’re in to bird watching you’re in for a real treat as Bird Watching at Maya Palmsthere are more varieties of birds in the Yucatan Peninsula than in the entire United States and Canada combined.  Here are just a few of the birds identified by bird watchers staying at Maya Palms.
