HCS-D Certification (Optional)

Test your ICD-9 and ICD-10 knowledge and take the optional exam on Friday, May 16, 2014 (8:30am registration, followed by 9:00am - 11:30am exam time). Separate advance registration must be made directly to the Board of Medical Specialty Coding & Compliance (BMSC). Click here for a copy of the exam registration form for ICD-10 (link to the ICD-9 exam registration form to follow). Fax the completed form to BMSC at (301) 287-2535. Exam fee is payable direclty to BMSC. For more information about HCS-D ICD-9 and ICD-10 certification and study resources, call BMSC toll-free at 1-855-CALL-DH1. A complimentary exam study session will be given on May 14, 2014 for ICD-9 test takers (5:00pm-6:30pm) and May 15, 2014 for ICD-10 test takers (5:00pm to 6:30pm).


About the Speaker


Judy Adams is the President and CEO of Adams Home Care Consulting, Inc. and provides clinical and operational consultation and education services to home care, home health and hospice organizations for over 30 years. She is a member of the Board of Medical Specialty Coding & Compliance (BMSC) since 2010 and one of the lead technical advisors in the creation of the HCS-D exam and certification.

Provider approved by the California Board of Nursing, Provider Number CEP 15642 for 7 contact hours per day of class for nurses and 7 CEUs per day of class for HCS-D credential holders.

Despite the delay of ICD-10 implementation to October 1, 2015, health care industry in general continues with their training and other preparatory activities related to Diagnosis Coding. This reformatted program agenda will focus on BOTH accurate ICD-9 & ICD-10 crosswalks coding! This class will increase your hands-on knowledge on both important code sets that are most likely to impact home health and hospice coding and serves as preparatory class for taking the ICD-9 or ICD-10 HCS-D certification exam. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION and OBJECTIVES: (ALL 3 DAYS)  REVISED OBJECTIVES!

MAY 13, 2014 (8:00 am to 4:30 pm): (HOSPICE Track)  Registration starts from 7am to 8am

 Hospice Coding is devoted to didactic and hands-on coding experience with those conditions and guidelines more likely to be used within Hospice settings related to the terminal status/prognosis of the patient and includes the following REVISED objectives:

  1. Compare and contrast major structural and guideline differences in  ICD-10-CM compared to ICD-9-CM.
  2. Identification of specific sequencing guidance and selection of accurate ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for a sample of primary and secondary malignant neoplasm situations.
  3. Accurate identification and selection of accurate ICD-9 and ICD-10-CM coding for a sampling of diabetic and malnutrition codes most likely to be used in hospice.
  4. Accurate identification, sequencing and application of correct ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes for   sample  cardio-pulmonary conditions more common to the hospice setting such as hypertension,  CAD, angina, heart failure, and the variety of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease codes, their combinations and exacerbations.
  5. Apply correct coding to dementia, depression, degenerative neurological diseases   and other  miscellaneous codes.
  6. Apply correct ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding selection for a variety of ulcers, including pressure, stasis, and arterial ulcers and other skin conditions, including the use of the  new ICD-10-CM code to describe location and severity of non-pressure ulcers. 
  7. Describe and contrast the differences in code selection and sequencing for sequela of cerebrovascular disease and  pathological and traumatic fractures in ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM, including use of 7th characters.

MAY 14 and 15, 2014 (8:00 am to 4:30 pm): (HOME HEALTH Track)  Registration each day starts from 7am to 8am

Designed to provide instruction in ICD-10-CM for individuals practicing in the post acute home care settings of home health and hospice. The program focuses on the application of the guidelines and correct selection and sequencing of ICD-10-CM codes to selected diagnostic statements and situations related to  body systems, factors influencing health status, and injuries, poisoning and other consequences of external causes. Attendees will be expected to apply coding principles and guidelines to selected case examples and scenarios to meet the following REVISED objectives:

1. Compare and contrast major structural and convention differences between  ICD-10-CM  compared to ICD-9 –CM. 

2. Demonstrate the correct use of ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for factors influencing health status such as  aftercare, status, history, and attention.

3. Identify the differences in coding diabetes accurately select appropriate ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for illustrative examples. 

4. Apply correct ICD-10 code selection to selected Mental, Behavioral and Neurodevelopmental  disorders. 

5. Identify and apply correct selection to codes for Diseases of the Nervous system in ICD-9 and ICD-10-CM.

6. Apply correct sequencing guidelines and  accurate ICD-9 and ICD-10-CD codes  to a sample  of benign and malignant neoplasm situations.

7. Describe and apply correct coding guidelines and ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes to a variety of diseases of the circulatory system.

8. Identify differences between  ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM coding through application of correct code selection for key respiratory conditions. t application of key pulmonary codes such as pneumonia, COPD, asthma, and emphysema.

 9. Apply correct ICD-9 and ICD-10-CM coding to selected conditions of the digestive system and genitourinary systems.

10. Describe the differences in coding wounds in ICD-9 and ICD-10 CM and apply correct for a variety of complicated surgical and non-surgical wounds.

11. Identify and apply accurate ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM  code selection for a variety of musculoskeletal  situations.

12. Demonstrate correct ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM code selection and sequencing for trauma wounds and late effects and injuries.

13. Describe and accurately demonstrate application of the principles of coding poisoning, adverse effects and underdosing in ICD-9  and ICD-10-CM. 

To gain the most from this class, all attendees must bring a (2012-2014 edition) ICD-9-CM Coding book and ICD-10-CM (2012-2014 edition) Coding book with them to the class.  It is preferable that attendees have at least some familiarity with the layout of the manuals and have reviewed the Official guidelines.
