Who should participate?
The Assessment for Responsive Teaching project provides training for two groups of educators:
- Educators and directors in early childhood program and family child care providers.
Why Should I Participate?
- High-quality CEU trainings are reasonably priced and will be available in every region of the state.
- Early educators who work in family child care settings or programs that have not used the Teaching Strategies GOLD system prior to the training are eligible to receive a year's subscription free of charge. Program administrators who are not also teachers are not eligible for licenses.
- Prioritized Early Education and Care programs may recieve a free ASQ-3 starter kit.
- These assessment trainings will help meet requirements of the Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS).
Region 5 EPS, SEEPP, in partnership with The Collaborative for Educational Services(CES) in Northampton, MA, is pleased to provide access to a new statewide program: Assessment for Responsive Teaching. This program will provide training and support for early childhood educators, providers, and public kindergarten and preschool teachers in observational assessment of children from infancy through kindergarten in Southeastern MA.
As educators, when we know each child – the whole child—we can best meet the child’s needs. Observing and documenting children in their daily activities, and then planning curriculum based on what we have learned, enables us to respond to the individual child through our teaching. Assessment for learning, as well as assessment of learning, leads to the responsive teaching that maximizes children’s development.

Observation and Documentation for Assessment and Planning
5 hours (0.5 CEUs) $15.00 Educator Co-Pay
Observing children in the daily life of their early childhood classroom is a powerful way to assess them. By observing children, you can get a rich understanding of the whole child’s development over time. In this course you will learn ways to observe children and document your observations during a busy day. You will have the opportunity to further develop your skills by practicing observation and documentation using video vignettes and by participating in small-group discussions and reflection.

Assessing Diverse Learners
5 hours (0.5 CEUs) $15.00 Educator Co-Pay
A child’s language, culture, and ability have an important impact on the assessment process. Through this course you will gain skills and understanding for fairly and effectively assessing children who are diverse in terms of culture, language, and ability. To enhance your ability to assess diverse learners, the course will present and incorporate the principles of universal design for learning (UDL) as well as important information on first and second language learning.

Engaging Families in the Asessment Process
5 hours (0.5 CEUs) $15.00 Educator Co-Pay
In this course educators will learn ideas, tools, and tips for engaging families in child assessments in order to make families strong partners in their child’s education. You will also learn ways to gain information from families to deepen your understanding of the child. Among the topics addressed will be attention to culturally responsive interactions, ideas for gathering information from families, and family-friendly ways of sharing data.

Understanding and Implementing Developmental Screening
5 hours (0.5 CEUs) $15.00 Educator Co-Pay
In this course you will learn why developmental screening is so important when working with young children. You will also learn what to look for when choosing a screening tool, ways to implement a screening program, how to involve parents in the screening process, and how to follow-up when screening results indicate children may need further evaluation. This course will also provide an introduction to how to use the ASQ-3 screening tool.

Teaching Strategies Gold
12 hours (1 CEU or 10 PDPs) $30.00 Educator Co-Pay
Prerequisite: formal professional development or coursework in observation and documentation of young children
This twelve-hour training introduces teachers to Teaching Strategies GOLD, a Web-based, developmentally appropriate assessment system for children from birth through kindergarten. Through video clips, small-group work, and facilitator-led discussions, teachers will explore the structure, features, and functionality of the tool and practice using it to follow the four-step assessment cycle. Hands-on activities include observing children and writing objective observation notes, evaluating a child portfolio, and communicating assessment information with families. By the end of the session, teachers will have the basic skills they need to begin implementing Teaching Strategies GOLD in their classrooms.

Utilzing Data for Planning Individualized Learning (for educators)
For educators – 5 hours, .5 CEU (prerequisite: experience using a Formative Assessment Tool such as Teaching Strategies Gold or ork Sampling)
Once you have learned how to use a formative assessment tool, how do you interpret and use all the data you have entered into it? In this course you will learn how to use the data to plan individualized learning for children. You will also learn how to create reports to help them share information with families and colleagues who could help you make decisions around the child’s learning.

Utilizing Data for Administrative Decision-Making
For administrators – 5 hours, .5 CEU (prerequisite: prerequisite: experience using a Formative Assessment Tool such as Teaching Strategies Gold or ork Sampling)
Once you have been trained in a formative assessment tool, how do you use all the data that teachers have entered in it? In this course you will learn how to view and interpret the data in the assessment tool to support teachers, share information with parents, and inform decision-making for your program or school. You will learn about the variety of reports that can be created from the assessment tool and will have practice in interpreting the data in these reports.

Technical Assistance
Assessment for Responsive Teaching (ART) provides free, ongoing technical assistance through June 2016 for all educators and administrators trained in Teaching Strategies GOLD. We have experienced trainers all across the state to provide the support you need. We understand that implementation of formative assessment and the use of an online assessment tool come with many challenges. You can continue to request and obtain support as your questions and needs change over time. For example, at first you might have questions about how to enter data and finalize checkpoints, and later might want help knowing how to observe and document more efficiently, or knowing how to use the various TS GOLD reports. Our aim is to help educators learn how to make formative assessment and the use of TS GOLD a more manageable, meaningful, integrated part of classroom practice.
Is there a cost for technical assistance? All technical assistance we provide to you is free of charge.
