The Legendary Ladies - Unconventional Women of the West
Colorful characters and a Guest Speaker. May have drawings.
The Legendary Ladies, founded in 1992, grew from early members’ mutual love of women’s history, costumes, and performance. Known for the first thirteen years as The Shady Ladies, the group participated in a variety of parades and festivals and developed their signature performance, “Unconventional Women of the West.”
In 2005, members voted for a change of name to The Legendary Ladies and also decided to focus more on historical performance. As a result, most members have researched and written scripts for at least three different women from the time period of the mid-1800’s to the mid-1900’s. Our mission is to promote the history of women who made unique contributions to the West.
The Legendary Ladies' characters for this program are: Annie Oakley - Sharpshooter, Lillie Hitchcock Coit - Eccentric patroness of Firefighters, Klondike Kate - flamboyant dancer and vaudeville star who not only mined the miners, but financed them and Katherine Lee Bates - professor at Wellesley College and poet who wrote the words to " America The Beautiful" while visiting Pikes Peak in 1893.

Art Cook served as the Community Relations Spokesperson for the first 9 years of the new Master Planned Community of Highlands Ranch. A long-time Mission Viejo employee, he relocated to Highlands Ranch when Mission Viejo first purchased and started developing this community. Art, a happy farm boy at heart, thrived in the Ranching climate here, and quickly went to work developing community events and activities for this new venture. " Nine years of helping to build an entire community from scratch has left Art with more memories in his heart and head than most of us can imagine!" (Kathy Plourde, Highlands Ranch Herald, July 1988). Learn about the fun and tradition-building events back then. Art will fly into Denver just for this special event!
