Join Dr. Pui-Yan Lam for Bystander Intervention Training.

Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, we have seen a surge in hate crimes and biased incidents against Asians and Asian Americans. The latest national report issued by the organization Stop AAPI Hate reported a total of 9,081 hate incidents during the period between March 19, 2020 and June 30, 2021. The mass shootings in Atlanta and Indianapolis took the lives of 6 Asian women and 4 Sikh men respectively. The FBI recently reported that the number of hate crimes in 2020 has risen to its highest level in 12 years.

This bystander intervention training will provide a historical context to the rise of anti-Asian racism. It will introduce the 5-Ds approach to step up and intervene safely in cases of anti-Asian / Asian American harassment. We will discuss why these small acts of intervention matter. We will also look at how we can go beyond bystander intervention and fight against anti-Asian racism in our everyday life.
