This year we looked at two topics in particular which have strong relevance to the interests of senior management of tanker companies.
We will look at maintaining staff passion about shipping, and ways to get better at seeing staff as an asset rather than a cost - as a pathway to continuing the improvement in safety.
We'll look at how to make sure new technology is adopted sensibly, so companies can make more with it, but without it overcomplicating operations.
We will look in more depth at making better choices about rope, cybersecurity, and the business benefits of investing in improved shipboard catering.

Putting people at the centre of ship operation
-Improvement in marine safety has slowed down - has the current paradigm reached its limits?
-Do our unruly, poorly integrated and complex technologies, combined with rigid, complex management systems, contribute to the problem?
-The human element focus has been on the human as an "error prone component" rather than looking at the contribution people can make, to safety, environmental performance, and efficient and reliable operation. Can this be improved?
- What ideas can we learn from other industries, and the study of resilience engineering?
