Ethical Concerns for New Lawyers

October 26, 2023
12:05 pm- 1:00 pm

Webinar

Presented by April McMurrey
1 hour Ethics CLE Applied for

This presentation will include a brief introduction to the Office of Attorney Regulation and its role in monitoring ethical violations, a discussion of how an attorney's duties of competence, communication, and diligence can be satisfied (or not!) in the courtroom context, and a question and answer session with a focus on ethical issues that arise most often in new lawyers’ practice.

The presentation will consider not only what actions in the courtroom lawyers should or should not perform, but also how they should perform them. In addition, generic hypotheticals will be proposed and discussed to give attendees an opportunity to apply the ethical rules to situations in and outside the courtroom.

Ms. McMurrey is Deputy Regulation Counsel for the intake division of the Colorado Supreme Court Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel. Ms. McMurrey received her undergraduate degree from Colorado State University and her law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law.

Ms. McMurrey joined the Office of Attorney Regulation in 2001 as a law clerk. She was later promoted to the trial division, where she worked for seven years as an Assistant Regulation Counsel. Ms. McMurrey then worked in the intake division as an Assistant Regulation Counsel before being promoted to Deputy. Ms. McMurrey is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, the Colorado Women's Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association Ethics Committee, and the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility's Continuing Legal Education Committee.
