The panel will address topics that involve what constitutes Professionalism (as defined by the CBA/DBA Professionalism Committee) -conduct reflecting the values embodied in the Colorado Attorney Oath of Admission, the Colorado Principles of Professionalism, and the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.  There will be discussion of how to make sure we as counsel act competently, civilly, and with integrity, in service of the public good and the interests of justice, and the panel will use illustrations and examples of what to do and not do in that regard. There will be discussion of the Colorado Oath of Admission, and in particular the portions dealing with respect, the requirement of actions being consistent with truth and honor. There will be a juxtaposition of elements of the Oath (fairness, courtesy, respect, and working toward the betterment of society) with Rule 8.4 of the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct which provides that it is professional misconduct for a lawyer to:

(g) engage in conduct, in the representation of a client, that exhibits or is intended to appeal to or engender bias against a person on account of that person's race, gender, religion, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, whether that conduct is directed to other counsel, court personnel, witnesses, parties, judges, judicial officers, or any persons involved in the legal process;

There will be discussion of concrete methods for addressing, whether in dealing with clients, opposing counsel, the Court, juries, or others we encounter, issues central to and commonly presented by people of diverse backgrounds.

Every year CTLA / CDLA gets together and celebrates "Professionalism Month.”  What is Professionalism Month?  The Colorado Defense Lawyers Association and the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association nominate an attorney from each other's respective membership who've shown professionalism and collegiality throughout the years.  We will have a short program for the joint membership followed by giving the honorees their prestigious awards.  Jan Spies, Spies Powers & Robinson, received CTLA's award and Jason Alleman, Anderson Hemmat, received CDLA's.  You are invited to join.
