Ethics CLE: Protecting your Client and Yourself
June 30, 2020 from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
1 hour Ethics CLE applied for
CDLA Members Only Please
Presented by
Kendra Beckwith & Katherine Otto, Messner Reeves
Topics for this presentation will include best practices at the beginning of the attorney-client relationship, with particular focus on insurance defense counsel. Topics will include clearing conflicts, dos and don’ts for engagement letters, referral to personal counsel, and navigating coverage questions from your client.
We all strive to comply with the Rules of Professionalism. However, when a client becomes unhappy with your representation (or an unfavorable outcome), or an adversary asserts a direct challenge to your representation of a client, close scrutiny of your ethical compliance can result in some gut-check moments. This presentation aims to help you proactively issue-spot ethical minefields.
The speakers will share their insights based on their cumulative experience defending attorney malpractice claims, defending attorney grievances, and serving on the Colorado Bar Association Ethics Committee.
