CDLA New Lawyers Boot Camp

November 15, 2019

The program is offered FREE to all CDLA

members on a first-come, first-served basis!

9 hours of CLE requested, including one hour of ethics.

This is an intensive all-day class intended to impart excellence in practice skills to new defense lawyers - our target audience is attorneys in their first or second years of practice. Topics range from time management, to taking and defending depositions, to time recording and billing, to handling written discovery, and more. There will also be a presentation from two experienced judges on the dos and don'ts of court appearances.

The program will run from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm with 30 minutes for a lunch break and two fifteen minute coffee breaks. Total class time will be 450 minutes. All of the subject matter is directed toward developing excellence is practice skills for new litigation attorneys. The classes will be taught by three experienced litigators: Thomas Rice (Senter Goldfarb & Rice); Ellis Mayer (Nathan, Dumm & Mayer); and Billy George-Hertzke (Senter Goldfarb & Rice). Subjects taught by the attorneys will be: time management; time recording and billing; taking and defending your first depositions; and professionalism and collegiality. There will also be a presentation on the "Dos and Don'ts of Court Appearances" by Judge John Leopold (Ret. Arapahoe County District Court). This program will last 75 minutes, and will delve into the "Colorado Oath of Admission" and the ethical ramifications of that oath. Mr. Rice's lecture on "Professionalism and Collegiality" will last 30 minutes, and will consider the "Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct" as they relate to dealing with opposing counsel, witnesses, and the courts in the setting of contested litigation. Therefore, nine hours of general credit and one hour of ethics credit are sought.
